The incident has left more than a hundred residents without water for several hours.
At midday today, a spectacular water leak was caused in Eixample, Barcelona, when pipework was accidentally drilled through. The leak occurred at the junction of calle Comte Borrell and calle Buenos Aires during works subcontracted out to a third party by Aigües de Barcelona, the water company in charge of the repair.
According to the utility company, they were informed of the incident between 2pm and 3pm on Tuesday, and a number of engineers were dispatched to the site to stop the leak and repair the pipework.
The leak has affected a total of 117 local residents, whose water supply has been cut off for several hours. The pipework repairs were completed and the water supply restored at 7pm that night.
The leak occurred at the junction opposite the Jardines de Marcos Redondo gardens, where a number of demountables will be provisionally put in place in time for September when they will be used by the 150 pupils of the Escola Entença school.
Local residents have objected to the city council's decision to site the school in the gardens, as they do not want to lose this green space and they have formed a platform to prevent the project from proceeding.
